Our Mission

Why is it important to Save Our Water?

The mission of the Save Our Water program is to educate Californians about the severe challenges facing the state’s water system and the need to conserve.

California is facing severe water challenges. Water is in short supply for many cities, farms and businesses, and will remain so for the foreseeable future. The shortages are due to several factors, including the ongoing drought, environmental problems that are reducing water deliveries, California’s growing population, increasing pressure on the state’s water storage and delivery system, and climate change.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger proclaimed a statewide emergency in February 2009 due to drought and asked all Californians reduce their individual water use by 20%. Even when normal rainfall returns, the state will continue to see water shortages.

State and local water managers are looking at solutions, but in the meantime, there is an immediate need for Californians to reduce their water use. Conservation is a key part of a comprehensive solution to the state’s water challenges, and it’s something we can do today.
