Garden with California Natives

Submitted by Keith
Estimated water saved: 20 gallons per day

"Garden with California native plants and trees instead of non-native California friendly ones. You'll not only save just as much water (if not more) you'll reduce your use of pesticides and help improve water quality, plus you'll also attract birds, hummingbirds, butterflies and other wildlife to your yard.   (Question: Did you use the term "California-friendly" because you knew that natives are not as readily available in the retail trade as are many non-native Mediterraneans?  Or did you use the term because you thought the definition include natives and any drought-tolerant, non-invasive plant? I know you probably wanted to keep the tips short and sweet, but I think you're doing a great environmental disservice by not including natives ("Plant native and California-friendly plants and trees.")"

Rainbarrel

Submitted by Ineke
Estimated water saved: 20 gallons per day

"For years I have a large a plastic rainbarrel in which we collect rainwater from the gutter. I use this water strictly for houseplants. By early fall the barrel is almost empty depending on the late rainfalls. I also fill 2 gl. plastic detergent- containers with spigots with rain. I use this for waterin small seed containers outside. We have a bucket in the shower, the water collected is used for flushing the toilet."
