Rainbarrel

Submitted by Ineke
Estimated water saved: 20 gallons per day

"For years I have a large a plastic rainbarrel in which we collect rainwater from the gutter. I use this water strictly for houseplants. By early fall the barrel is almost empty depending on the late rainfalls. I also fill 2 gl. plastic detergent- containers with spigots with rain. I use this for waterin small seed containers outside. We have a bucket in the shower, the water collected is used for flushing the toilet."

Thought I'd expand this further. In addition, keep a 5 gal plastic container (like from Home Depot) in your bathroom. Have a smaller bucket in your shower that will fill up as you shower. Empty the smaller bucket into the 5 gal container. When needed, take water from the 5 gal container to flush a toilet.

Our family have cut water consumption by making conscious efforts such as turning off the water when soaping in the shower and watering our lawn at night 3 times a week.
