The Sunset Western Garden Book

Why I love my garden:

I love my garden because it is a place of serenity and color.  My greatest joy is being able to grow my own fruits and vegetables – to make meals based on what is coming from the garden.

What surprises people most about water-wise landscaping?

I think it surprises people that a water-wise landscape can look so nice.

Saving water is important because…

water is essential for all life.  We need to be wise stewards of the resources we have.  I believe that saving water is something  we can all do – even with little steps at a time.

My two favorite gardening quotes:

The first comes from a children’s poem in Spanish by Francisco Alarcón called “Jitomates Risueños” (Laughing Tomatoes) :  “En el jardín plantamos jitomates, los vegetales más felices de todos.”  (In the garden we plant tomatoes, the happiest vegetables of all…)

The second is:  “No occupation is so delightful to me as the culture of the earth, and no culture comparable to that of the garden.” Thomas Jefferson
